While both come from the same plant (Camellia sinensis), matcha and green tea are not the same. Matcha is made from shade-grown tea leaves that are carefully stone-ground into a fine powder—meaning you’re consuming the whole leaf, not just an infusion. This makes matcha significantly higher in antioxidants, L-theanine, and caffeine, offering a more potent energy and wellness boost. Green tea is brewed like a regular tea bag and has a lighter flavor and lower nutrient content. Ceremonial-grade matcha is the highest drinking grade of matcha, made from the first-flush, shade-grown buds of Camellia sinensis. The young leaves are steamed to stop oxidation, then de-stemmed and de-veined (becoming tencha) and stone-milled into an ultra-fine powder. The result is a vivid jade green, silky texture, and a sweet, umami-forward flavor with minimal bitterness—designed to be whisked and enjoyed straight (traditional usucha/koicha) or as a clean latte.

From an energy standpoint, a typical 2 g (≈1 tsp) serving provides ~55–75 mg caffeine—about an espresso—paired with naturally high L-theanine, which many people experience as calm, steady focus rather than the spikes and dips common with coffee.
